There’s an infamous quote by Mother Teresa and it goes “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” I am sure you would have heard it, or some version of it. You may have at some point in time, even taken time to think about and comprehend it.
Yesterday is gone. You can’t live in the past with it’s mistakes and regrets. The past is gone, there is nothing that can be un-done, erased. There is no point in worrying and stressing over things that were.
Tomorrow has not yet come. There is no telling what your future holds. It takes the smallest of events unfolding in a chain re-action, to dramatically change the direction you thought you were headed. You can’t fret over what’s to come.
We have only today. ‘Today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” -Bil Keane Today is a gift to be embraced, celebrated and lived. If you’re living in the past or the future there’s no way you can be living in the moment. The moment – today, is THE BEST place to be!
We all know this. But how often do you find yourself stressing about the past? Fights, accidents and mistakes, unpleasant situations…all this does is keeps you in a negative, stressed mind frame. How often do you find yourself worried about the future? There’s bills, mortgage, kids, new people, new places..Worrying about things that have not happened keeps you in a similar mind frame.
Take time, every time you start worrying or stressing bring yourself back to the here and now. Weather you need to stop for a minute and take deep breaths, meditate or consciously bring your mind back to right here, right now. You can’t change the past and you can’t predict the future. Live for the moment, enjoy the time you’re in now.
There is nothing wrong in remembering the past, having gratitude for where you have been and what you have learnt. Just as ther is nothing wrong with having hope for the future. The only wrong, is to dwell on a past we regret, and to be so anxious of a future we can’t see, that we miss all that is happening in our present.
Here are a few more quotes for you to think about :)
“It’s being here now that’s important. There’s no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.” ― George Harrison
Children have neither past nor future; they enjoy the present, which very few of us do. -Jean de la Bruyere
“The past is a ghost, the future a dream and all we ever have is now.” -Bil Cosby
You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present. –Jan Glidwell
Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present. –Albert Camus
